A&R Interview
How did SideOneDummy Records start and what’s with the name?
The story goes like this: (Circa 1995) there was a guy named Joe Sib who used to sing in a band called WAX on Interscope Records (They were the band with the video of the guy running down the street on fire.) He started his own record label to put out 7”s of his friend’s bands. It was called Side One Records. His roommate at the time was Bill Armstrong, former axeman of the band Green Thumb, which also included co-axeman, Chris Shiflett (Foo Fighters, NUFAN, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes). Coincidentally, Bill was also starting his own label, Dummy Records, and was gearing up to release full lengths. After not much thought at all, Joe and Bill pooled their life savings and joined forces. Why change the name? Combine the two! So, there it was, SideOneDummy Records. Their first release was a Swingin’ Utters collection CD. Joe & Bill own and run the company to this day!
What should a band or artist do to get a record deal! Where should an artist send their demo?
If you think your band is rad and you have something special, then we would love to hear it. All we are interested in is the music and how to contact you at first. Save yourself time and money and don’t send a million things. If your music sucks, then all that stuff just goes in the trash. You should use Music Contacts 2008 to contact record labels that are looking to sign acts in that particular music genre.
